If you have coulrophobia (a fear of clowns), then you might want to stay away from Burger King this Halloween. Last year’s panic over creepy clown sightings and the recent success of the reboot of It have created a buzz around clowns, and now BK is getting in on the action.
On October 31st, BK is giving out a free Whopper sandwich to the first 500 guests in clown costume.
In the promotional video launching their Scary Clown Night, a Burger King worker is being chased by clowns to claim their free whoppers. The first clown looks strikingly similar to Ronald McDonald, which, of course, appears to be BK trolling McDonald’s. The 90-second ad also encourages guests to post their scary clown costumes and tag @BurgerKing with #ScaryClownNight. Watch it below:
Come as a clown, eat like a king.
Renato Rossi, head of marketing for Burger King UK, said, “The BK brand is known for welcoming all customers and putting the crown on everyone’s head. This Halloween, come like a clown to eat like a king.”
The offer is valid only for the first 500 clowns; only at select restaurants across Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, Austin and Salt Lake City, between 7pm and closing.
Last year, BK took another jab at its competitor on Halloween by dressing up one of its restaurants in as McDonald’s.
