Clean your digital house with National Unfriend Day

Have you ever scrolled through your list of Facebook friends and realized you don’t recognize half the names popping up in your News Feed? If that’s the case, I’d like to wish you a happy National Unfriend Day!

What started as a funny make-believe holiday by Jimmy Kimmel a few years ago has now become an annual occurrence. Every November 17th, participating Facebook and social media users take a good hard look at their friends list and decide who to unfriend.

There are more than 1.3 billion users on Facebook; I’m sure plenty of us have receiving friend requests from old classmates, a college ex-girlfriend or random acquaintance making your friends lists even more bloated.

“Most people have between four and 30 friends in their life,” according to Kimmel. “Facebook friends can go into the thousands, and it’s time to get rid of them.”

Who do you choose to unfriend?

Facebook has its own page for National Unfriend Day which you can find here. It suggests criteria that you can use to decide who to unfriend. These people include:

  • Friends who constantly ask to be lent money, only to never be see again.
  • People who invite you to ‘like’ whatever page they’re obsessed with this week.
  • Friends who are constantly complaining about every little thing that happens to them.
  • And others…

So what are you waiting for? Celebrate National Unfriend Day by taking advantage of this judgement-free opportunity to ditch those Candy Crush and Farmville requesting people on your friends list.
