Electric wallpaper doubles as a power source

Decorating your home with wallpaper gives you a wide array of looks: from country charm to traditional warmth. However, design, art, and technology are all intertwined in this new electric wallpaper. Co-developed by wallpaper company Flavor Paper and design firm UM Project, sounds, lights and motions are combined in a decorative and playful display titled Conduct.

Part of New York’s design festival NYCXDesign, this unique wallpaper doubles as a power source. The designers intended the display to create a unified system between the electric wallpaper tiles and the other objects; setting it apart from other projects that use conductive ink.

“The availability of water-based conductive ink made my brain go into hyperdrive with thoughts of a multitude of potential uses for fun and engaging designs,” said Flavor Paper’s founder Jon Sherman.

Touching one of the copper dots on the wall that’s covered with conductive ink wallpaper completes an electrical circuit. Thus, turning on the object.

“What interests us in the collaboration is of course using simple technology, connective ink; but the opportunity to bring together 2D and 3D design into some kind of an immersive experience”, said UM Project founder François Chambard.

Modular elements in the electric wallpaper can be made up of different colours, patterns and devices. Therefore adapting it for different environments, such as children’s museums and corporate lobbies.
