Swiss designers creates lamps inspired by pollen grains

Spring is beautiful, but it’s also a key time of year for seasonal allergies. As plants release pollen, millions of people with hay fever start to sniffle and sneeze. However, Swiss art director Regine Cavicchioli, Roman Jurt and Michael Kennedy from the Zurich University of the Arts have created unique lamps as a tribute to the pesky allergens.

Inspired by the beauty of pollen grains as seen under a microscope, this series of lamps are each based off of a different particulate. They recreated the molecules based on microscope (SEM) images and 3D printed them with nylon powder using Selective Laser Sintering technologies.

“We reverse engineered nature, and we both find the result to be very, very aesthetic,” says Roman.

The lamps were displayed in different places to illustrate pollen dispersal. There are currently six lamps in the series, called Ambrosia, Fraxinus, Betula, Helianthus, Taraxacum, and Poaceae. These are particles from plants such as birch trees, sunflowers, grass, and the notoriously allergenic ragweed.
