Learn how to swear like the British

Once the use of profanities in public was outright appalling to most in general society. Nowadays, swear words like fuck, shit and bollocks are just part of normal conversation. In fact, a recent study in the UK found that people are more comfortable with swearing on television than they used to be. And research in the US indicates that people are increasingly likely to swear at work.

Yet, the British seem far more fluent at swearing than Americans. Likely, that’s because they’re more likely to link colourful language with having a sense of humour than with vulgarity. Some even have the ability to make a word sound like a swear word, even when it isn’t. Regardless, the new host of Anglophenia who recently stepped into Siobhon Thompson’s shoes, Kate Arnell, walks us cheerfully through commonly used British swear words. Some of the featured swear words include bloody, bollocks, pissed and sod. She also details their origins and the proper way you can use them in a sentence. And make sure you get some practice in on the highway home tonight.
