The most-backed Kickstarter project ever: Exploding Kittens

The name says it all doesn’t it. Exploding Kittens, a card game created by Elan Lee (Xbox, ARGs), Matthew Inman (The Oatmeal), and Shane Small (Xbox, Marvel), has officially become the most backed Kickstarter project of all time.

Exploding Kittens made history when it became the most-backed game in Kickstarter history and the campaign with the most number of backers, ever. When this article was first posted on January 30th, 2015, Inman’s Kickstarter project had been funded by more than 122,261 backers and has received more than $4.8 million US in pledges. The initial goal for the project was $10,000, but that was funded in a mere 20 minutes, reaching 1,000% funding within an hour. By the end of the campaign, they reached 219,382 backers who pledged a grand total of $8,782,571 US – which is insane.

So how does it work?

Exploding Kittens is a highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette. Players take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game. The deck is made up of cards that let you avoid exploding by peeking at cards before you draw, forcing your opponent to draw multiple cards, or shuffling the deck.
