Nike creates self-lacing shoes from Back to the Future

Back in 2011, the Nike Air Mag (the shoes from Back To The Future Part II) were released to an insatiable fan base. The only disappointment was that they weren’t self-lacing like in the movie.

Nike promised they would have them in 2015 to coincide with the date Michael J Fox’s character arrived in. Today the company delivered on that promise. Coming on the heels (pardon the pun) of Pepsi releasing Pepsi Perfect, the self-lacing 2015 Nike Mag are now a real shoe that you can wear.

“We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes,” said Nike President and CEO Mark Parker.

How the self-lacing 2015 Nike Air Mags work

The Nike Air Mag contain a hidden powered mechanism that automatically cinches the sneaker’s laces tight once you’ve inserted your feet. There’s also a manual option as well, for when the batteries run down. The sleek design will also have its sole illuminated, much like the original movie prototype.

The first working pair of the self-lacing shoes were delivered to Michael J. Fox yesterday. It was only fitting that the first person to wear them from the original film 26 years ago should do so now.

Nike said that they will continue to test the technology across multiple sports, with the hopes that it can have a positive impact on athletes around the world. In any case, its already become an enduring pop culture icon that has inspired years of innovation.

“By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner,” added Parker.

The self-lacing Nike Air Mag will be available in limited quantities come spring 2016 via auction. Proceeds from the shoes will go to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
