Pantone and Korean automaker KIA have announced they’re collaborating to create a multi-coloured, dynamic mood lighting system for the 2019 K900 luxury sedan.

Of the 64 total colours available, Pantone created seven specific colour settings, each with its own message and meaning; covering the colour wheel from orange to purple, they’re inspired by oceans, forests, skies, the Aurora Borealis, and other aspects of nature with names like Refreshing Ocean, Dream Purple, Golden Insight and Peaceful Forest.

The ambient lighting is installed in the overhead console, door panels and both front and rear footwells of the vehicle to illuminate the sedan’s interior with soft hues. The mood lighting system, which has started making its way beyond homes, isn’t without purpose; it’s designed to encourage psychological stability and relaxation for drivers and passengers, easing stressful commutes and to imitate calming natural settings.

According to both companies, drivers can customize their own mood lighting preferences. They can match the colours, tones and brightness to the exact time of day and the reason for travel as a means of shaping the emotions of all the occupants in the vehicle.

Pantone explained that colours can create a psychological stability on the drivers and its passengers. The selected mood lighting could calm one down on stressful commutes and help drivers get through the day in a more natural setting. Watch the video below to learn more:

Colour and mood lighting psychology

To help you better understand colour in relationship to mood, here are some of their relationships:

Reds, orange and yellows

Red is the colour of energy, passion, action, ambition and determination. It also represents anger and sexual passion.

In the meaning of colours, magenta means universal harmony and emotional balance. It’s spiritual yet practical, encouraging common sense and a balanced outlook on life.

Orange is the colour of social communication and optimism. From a negative colour meaning it’s also a sign of pessimism and superficiality. Orange Delight is the colour of the Earth’s energy. It’s a colour that awakens the vitality inside us and infuses confidence and courage.

Yellow represents the mind and intellect; it’s optimistic and cheerful. However it can also suggest impatience, criticism and cowardice. Golden Insight was inspired by the sun. It’s full of vitality and clarity, delivering hope, happiness, and pleasurable pleasure.

Earthy colours

Green is the colour of balance and growth. Yet, it can mean both self-reliance as a positive and possessiveness as a negative. Peaceful forest was inspired by, well, the forest. In a forest full of greenery, we experience a recharging of the body’s lost balance and energy.

The colour brown is a friendly yet serious, down-to-earth colour that relates to security, protection, comfort and material wealth.

Blue is the colour of trust and peace. It can suggest loyalty and integrity as well as conservatism and frigidity. The Refreshing Ocean was inspired by the blue sea. Imagine a feeling of stability and serenity when you are floating in the deep sea or on the water. Blue Flight was inspired by the blue sky. This fascinating deep blue colour has a calmness and helps to relieve the burden and tension in busy everyday life.

Vibrant colours

Purple can be creative and individual or immature and impractical; it’s the colour of the imagination. Dream Purple was inspired by the Pantone Colour of the Year, Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet. Experience a dreamy purple colour that awakens creativity and intuition.

Violet is said to have the power to expand our consciousness and lead us to a higher level of knowledge. Aurora violet was inspired by the aurora that shines in the night sky. The soft violet colour conveys a feeling of being in a happy and pleasant atmosphere.

Black and white

White is colour at its most complete and pure, representing perfection, purity, innocence, wholeness and completion.

Finally, black is the colour of the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, creating an air of mystery. Yet it can also represent wealth.
