Pantone reveals not one, but two 2016 Colours of the Year

For the first time Pantone, the global authority on colour, has announced two Colours of the Year for 2016: Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, and her team ultimately decided to include two colours this year instead of just one because of the way the two hues play off one another.

“As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to the stress of modern day lives, welcoming colours that psychologically fulfil the yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent,” says Leatrice Eiseman.

According to Pantone, Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity, on the other hand, is weightless and airy, evoking feelings of respite and relaxation — like an expanse of blue sky.

The choice of tranquil, pastel colours isn’t all that surprising, as both were on the list of most fashionable colours announced by Pantone back in September.

Ultimately, the colours will go on to influence celebrities, designers, and retailers. In addition to clothing and home decor, Pantone said the two colours will also be popular in jewelry, handbags, footwear, and wearable technology.

“[The Color of the Year] becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy because people are going into the stores asking for it,” Pantone’s VP of Consumer Licensing Lisa Herbert said. “[Retailers] have to have it, even if they have to scramble to do it.”

  1. Two colors perhaps because neither color on it’s own has much impact. Together they are more powerful. However, I don’t see this trend carrying on to major appliances. Pink refrigerator? Nah.
