Pepsi comes ‘Back to the Future’ with Pepsi Perfect

Great Scott! We’ve landed in the future—or to be more accurate—the date that Michael J Fox went to in the movie Back to the Future Part II.

While some of that fictional future has already come true in the form of hover boards, the Cubs haven’t won the World Series yet. We are, however, finally getting going to be able to get our hands on Pepsi Perfect. For a limited time, and in celebration of the film’s 30th anniversary, Pepsi will be selling the Back to the Future soda made popular by the iconic film trilogy.

While Pepsi isn’t launching a new brand, it is releasing a new limited edition 16.9-ounce bottle today. Residents of the modern era can purchase one of 6,500 Pepsi Perfects for the hefty price of US$20.15 each. Thankfully it’s not quite as pricey as the $50 that Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown gave Marty in the film, but it’s still pretty expensive.

“Fans have always been a little crazy about it,” says Lou Arbetter, PepsiCo’s senior director of marketing, about the scene in the film where a Pepsi Perfect is delivered to Michael J. Fox’s character through a futuristic pneumatic tube, “and so we wanted to take advantage of the fact that Marty traveled to the future, to this month, and wanted to actually come out with the product.”

While Pepsi Perfect won’t be coming with a new flavour, it will be a more traditional Pepsi made with real sugar.

“We’re fans of this popular trilogy, and just generally, if you work at Pepsi you’re fans of pop culture. The brand has made its mark in pop culture frankly since Michael Jackson moonwalked. We’ve been dancing in and around pop culture for a while,” Arbetter says. “So we look at this as another opportunity to have a little bit of fun.”

Pepsi is advertising the bottles with a new spot—which you can view below—created by Davie Brown Entertainment. They’re very same agency that created and integrated the fictional Pepsi Perfect product in 1989’s Back to the Future Part II. Take a look at the ad below featuring robots, flying cars and, of course, big hair.

Details about how to obtain the long-coveted item will be released on Pepsi’s social media accounts.

Pepsi is part of a growing list of companies joining in on the fun of the original film’s 30th anniversary. In January, Nike announced that they would be releasing a version of its self-lacing Nike Mag shoes that were featured in iconic movie later this year, while Reston, Virginia will be renaming itself “Hill Valley” in honour of the film from October 21st to 25th.
