Young woman’s spectacular 3D latte art is almost too cute to drink

For 17-year-old Daphne Tan, coffee isn’t just a beverage, it’s also her canvas. The Singapore-based artist is quickly whipping up a storm on Instagram for her spectacular 3D latte art.

Even though the self-taught barista only began experimenting with 3D latte art a year ago, her skills have already attracted the attention of Singapore Coffee Festival organizers. They’ve invited Daphne to conduct demonstrations at this year’s event.

With the help of a milk frother, Daphne uses soy milk and carob powder to create the thick foam. She uses this to form the base shape. From there, she uses natural food colouring and melted chocolate. This adds the tiny details, such as fur patterns and faces. Her designs involve characters such as dogs, dolphins, and giraffes that appear to come to life; at times they even appearing to climb out of their mugs. With each of her 3D latte art creations typically take between 10 and 20 minutes to fashion.

“What sparked my interest was a school program where I had the opportunity to attend a workshop on the appreciation of gourmet coffee… I was experimenting with a French press and found a method to create stable foam to make 3D art on top of my cups. But now, I use a milk frother from Nespresso to create the foam.”
