These are the things you do not say to a designer

Clients who communicate clearly and politely—and are willing to collaborate—get the best work from their designers. Unfortunately, not all clients are created equally. That’s why graphic designer Janie Kliever has shared a list of things you do not say to a designer.

The list includes questions like “Can you just do your creative magic?” and the dreaded “Can I call you anytime?”,  as well as other questions that will typically get on the nerves of designers.

As with any collaborative environment, a little mutual respect goes a long way in creating a productive partnership. This list brings to light how clients aren’t asking the right questions and that they are stalling the project instead of helping.

Do not say to a designer:

Do not say to a designer: "We haven't finished the copy but can you design a draft?"
Do not say to a designer: "Can I get you to do something really fast?"
Do not say to a designer: "Can you put it in a format that we can edit?"
Do not say to a designer: "Can you do lots of different versions? I think I'll know what I want when I see it"
Do not say to a designer: "Can you Photoshop it?"
Do not say to a designer: "Can you do something that looks exactly like... this other designer's work?"
Do not say to a designer: "Can you use this image I found online?"
Do not say to a designer: "Can I make just one more change? (I promise it's the last one.)"
Do not say to a designer: "Can you have this done by tomorrow?"
Do not say to a designer: "Could you lower your rate by half?"

Designers, have you heard any of these before? Share some of the things that you hate to hear.
