Volkswagen anti-texting & driving campaign turns crashed cars into phone cases

Taking your eyes off the road while driving, even for a second, could lead to disaster. When it comes to distracted driving, texting is becoming the number one concert. In fact, Canadians say that texting while driving is one of the biggest threats to their personal safety on the road.

Drivers using their cell phones (texting) are up to eight times as likely to be involved in a crash. And police across Canada say that distracted driving has caused more collisions than impaired drivers. Yet, 33% of Canadians admit they’ve texted while stopped at a red light, despite believing it’s unacceptable.

Texting and driving is a serious problem

Distracted driving is a serious problem no matter where you live. Back in February, Sweden imposed a ban on mobile phone usage behind the wheel. However, Volkswagen noted that the number of vehicle crashes did not decline in the past couple of months.

So Volkswagen teamed up with the Swedish government to handcraft 153 phone cases from repurposed crashed car parts it’s calling Crashed Cases; one for each accident caused by texting & driving since the law came into affect. Their hope is that drivers will practice due caution when tempted to look at their phones.

“Hands on the wheel, not on the mobile,” reads a statement from the Swedish government.

About Crashed Cases

The portable reminders are built to fit iPhone 8, and are priced at SEK599 (CDN$89) each. All proceeds will be donated to nonprofit Trafikskadefonden, which aims to rehabilitate victims of car accidents.

Most of us know distracted driving is a problem, yet many continue to ignore the countless number of crashes that occur because of it. People have to learn to put down their phone and drive, unless they want their car to be someone’s phone case. To learn more, visit the Crashed Cases website.

What are your thoughts on this anti-texting campaign of crashed car phone cases? Do you think it’ll send a good message?
