Taking your eyes off the road while driving, even for a second, could lead to disaster. When it comes to distracted driving, texting is becoming the number one concert. In fact, Canadians say that texting while driving is one of the biggest threats to their personal safety on the road.

Drivers using their cell phones (texting) are up to eight times as likely to be involved in a crash. And police across Canada say that distracted driving has caused more collisions than impaired drivers. Yet, 33% of Canadians admit they’ve texted while stopped at a red light, despite believing it’s unacceptable.

Texting and driving is a serious problem

Distracted driving is a serious problem no matter where you live. Back in February, Sweden imposed a ban on mobile phone usage behind the wheel. However, Volkswagen noted that the number of vehicle crashes did not decline in the past couple of months.

So Volkswagen teamed up with the Swedish government to handcraft 153 phone cases from repurposed crashed car parts it’s calling Crashed Cases; one for each accident caused by texting & driving since the law came into affect. Their hope is that drivers will practice due caution when tempted to look at their phones.

“Hands on the wheel, not on the mobile,” reads a statement from the Swedish government.
