Conquer the hills of Norway with their ingenious bicycle lift

Bicycling up a hill can be a rather vigorous task, especially when your route has plenty of steep slopes. Now, bicyclists in Trondheim, Norway will no longer have to worry about hills. The CycloCable, situated at the Brubakken Hill in Trondheim, is revolutionizing urban transport.

Giving riders a 420-feet boost, CycloCable is a ski lift-inspired bicycle lift to assist cyclists. The bicycle lifts, first introduced as Trampe in 1993, was recently reintroduced in 2013 as CycloCable to include new safety regulations.

The bicycle lift climbs at a gradient of between 10 and 18 per cent. All the user has to do is put their foot on one of its 11 foot plates attached to a wire rope. The lift operates like the catapults on an aircraft carrier— though nowhere near as fast. After the initial burst it’s a simple case of keeping one foot on the plate and the other off the ground to cruise up the hill at 8kph.

The bicycle lift can ferry a maximum of five cyclists each time. It can also accommodate scooters and baby strollers. CycloCable has plans to spread throughout the cities of Europe, USA, Canada and the Far East. Unfortunately, the bicycle lift systems cost between $2,400 and $3,200 per meter. Which is why it probably hasn’t caught on yet. So far, however, this bicycle lift has already ferried more than 200,000 cyclists up the hill.
