Driftwood sculptures that represent the spirit of nature

Nature itself can a work of art. The elements can carve beauty into objects like stone or even wood. And once nature has created the canvas, artist Debra Bernier begins her work. Using natural materials such as driftwood, clay, shells and her rich imagination, she creates captivating sculptures that represent the spirits of nature.

“When I work with driftwood, I never start with a blank canvas. Each piece of driftwood is already a sculpture, created by the caresses of the waves and wind” says Debra.

From Victoria, British Columbia, Debra’s love with the beach and nature from childhood is what inspired her. And she is still happy and thankful that she is able to share this love and her art with people. Her pieces are a reflection both of her life, family, and children, as well as of the eternal and sacred connection that all living creatures share with nature.

According to Debra, the wood tells a story and she tries to think of its journey when holding it in her hand. She then extends or shortens the curves and contours that already exist into familiar shapes of animals or peoples’ faces.
