The Handy Awards for advertising’s biggest wankers

If you’re in the advertising industry, you probably started out in school sifting through the awards books and dreaming of one day seeing your name on one of those pages. Well, now you might see your name on an award as advertising awards have reached peak honesty with The Handys.

A new show that isn’t a show at all — it’s an app where you get a prize just for shaking your phone up and down like a real wanker. The people behind this, unfortunately fake, advertising award wanted to take a jab at the fact that there are really way too many advertising awards.

The concept comes from a couple of industry creatives who prefer to remain anonymous, according to the press materials. The Handy Awards doles out fake awards that are relatively simple to win; you just have to pull up the website on your phone and shake. The longer you shake, the more prestigious your Handy.

“It’s pretty clear award shows have gotten out of hand, so we wanted to take the piss out of them,” says one of the co-founders, “But the Handys also signify how male-dominated advertising is. The fact that only 3 percent of creative directors are women should be a wake-up call to everyone in the industry.”

According to their website, The Handy Awards are the world’s first advertising award show where you can give yourself an award in the comfort of your studio apartment, or at your desk within your agency’s open office. All without entering any work or sitting through someone else’s boring case study video.

If you want to give yourself an award, then check out the website on your phone and see how much of a wanker you really are.
