Amazingly delicate, life-like origami creations

Japan is considered by most to be the home of origami. In fact, it’s believed the first paper might have been brought to 6th century Japan by Buddhist monks. Although, the first real mention of the art-form comes from a reference in a 1680 poem. However, this traditional origami allowed for irregularly shaped pieces of paper and some cutting. And 100 years later, through the influence of German techniques, those who make origami creations now preferred folding paper without cutting.

Now, the paper-folding art-form is adding a Spanish influence with these amazingly delicate origami creations by Gonzalo Garcia Calvo. He meticulously crafts expressive and imaginative paper creatures using only his hands and a single, square sheet of colourful paper. The Madrid-based artist brings life-like creatures from the animal kingdom to life. Gonzalo, who works professionally as a musician, enjoys the challenge of bringing paper to life with his lovely origami creations.

Using a wide variety of techniques, Gonzalo can replicate many designs by top origami artists. He does, however, enjoy experimenting with different patterns, textures, and types of paper — including one that features fur, making his woolly mammoth actually woolly.
