Paintings on tree logs mirror their origins

You’ve seen landscape paintings before, but probably not like those I’m about to show you. New York-based artist Alison Moritsugu has created a fantastic series of paintings that capture the beauty of Mother Nature, but on tree logs.

These environmental landscape paintings utilize naturally fallen tree logs as both subject and canvas. By painted directly onto the tree logs—with the bark intact—her images reveal the past and present of America’s landscapes.

The fragmented nature of the trees evokes the wonder that early settlers may have experienced. Others, however, portray the industrialization and subsequent destruction of that land. Thus, it’s this sense of strained duality which is one of the main inspirations behind the Alison’s work.

“I like the juxtaposition and tension created by having an image of nature on a section or sample of real nature,” she explains.

It’s this contrast that makes Moritsugu’s work unique, causing viewers to reflect on how man has influenced nature and vice versa. Her environmental concerns are clear throughout, particularly in her choice to use threatened species of trees as her materials.

She shares, “by exploring idealized views of nature, my work acknowledges our more complex and precarious relationship with the environment.”
