Looking for a healthy alternative to donuts? Try sushi donuts

Move over rainbow sushi, sushi rolls shaped like a donut may be the newest craze that goes beyond the traditional sushi-creation. Australian vegan foodie Sam, who goes by the Instagram handle So Beautifully Raw, has come up with a different kind of donut. She’s pioneered a healthier, mouthwatering alternative called Sushi Donuts.

While it may sound like a sweet cake covered with raw fish instead of icing, the sushi donut is a far more appetizing affair than its name would have you believe. But to make these mouth-watering sushi donuts, Sam greased a donut mould with coconut oil and adding cooled sushi rice. After which she decorates the creation with black sesame, ginger, wasabi, cashew mayo and avocado.

Of course, you can use whatever ingredients you want. The only limit is your imagination.

There are a lot of different types of sushi out there; from Chirashizushi and Nigirizushi to Oshizushi and Inarizushi. However, look out for these sushi-delicacies to appear at restaurants and health stores near you, as even Whole Foods has created their own spin on the hybrid treat.

  1. First, prepare your sushi rice according to your preferred method.
  2. Next, prepare your vegetables and pickles, and other toppings. Cut them into thin slices using a mandolin or grater if possible to make eating in bites easier.
  3. Prepare a donut mould with a little oil, or just use your hands to shape if not available.
  4. Place some sushi rice into the mould, and fill and press down until level with the top of the mould. Empty the moulds when finished.
  5. Top your donuts with your desired toppings, and be as artistic as you want. Half the fun of the sushi donut is how it looks. You can alternate slices of toppings, or you can keep them together in different parts.
  6. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi as desired.

Do these donuts look appetizing to you? Would you fancy trying your hand at making some?
