World’s first timepiece made from real moon rock

Have you ever wonder what the government did with all the moon rock they brought back from the 1960s and 1970s? In Russia’s case, they apparently found a partner and sold some of it off to people with too much disposable income.

While people used to dream of going to the moon, their fantasies are now focused on visiting Mars. And since a trip to outer space is only within reach of the 1%, the Analog Watch Company is now offering the rest of us an opportunity to purchase a piece of space with the Lunar Watch.

This watch is the world’s first timepiece to be made from a solid piece of genuine moon rock; each Lunar Watch is cut from olivine basalt stone that was collected from the surface of the moon by the Soviet Luna probe in 1974. Those probes were part of a series of robotic spacecraft missions sent to the moon by the Soviet Union between 1959 and 1976.

Forming ancient rock into an elegant timepiece

Using radiometric dating techniques, the rock used for these timepieces have been dated approximately 4.5 billion years old; right around the time the Moon and Earth are believed to have formed.

However, since there aren’t piles of moon rock laying around on Earth, Russia only released limited quantities to the Analog Watch Company. Thus, only 25 moon rock timepieces were created. Each watch, however, is handcrafted over four months in Switzerland. The 41-mm moon rock case houses your basic analog watch—definitely no smartwatch OS on this timepiece. It also comes with an Italian black leather strap, sapphire crystal face, and stainless steel case back.

If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one, be prepared to fork out US$27,500 for one. And if you’re wondering if it’s actual moon rock, each watch comes with a certificate of authenticity. Watch the introduction to the Lunar Watch below and find out more about it here.

Would you like your very own timepiece made from real moon rock? How about one made from concrete?
