How do you remember when you have an important event coming up? With smartphones and smartwatches, there is no longer a need to have a calendar hanging on the wall. However, for the few who still want a physical reminder on their walls, there’s the e-paper Magic Calendar.

A project on Google’s Android Experiments, this sleek digital wall calendar was created by Japanese product designer Kosho Tsuboi. On the surface it looks just like any other standard paper wall calendar, but hidden behind its minimalist design is a state-of-the-art colour E-ink display. The Magic Calendar has the tangibility of paper and the changeability of a smartphone calendar.

Tsuboi explains, “I believe that there is a kind of surprise, or a certain type of impression, that will come from the ability to put changeable information on a media that has a similar weight, texture, or smooth feeling that we associate with touching paper.”

Using similar technology to that found on your Kindle, with the Magic Calendar you won’t have to rip off a page every month. This single sheet of paper syncs with Google Calendar, and updates itself in real time. The paper is also anti-reflective, making it viewable from all angles. The calendar only takes a single charge for it to last three months. In future, tangibles like sticky notes may follow in the footsteps of the Magic Calendar. That’s great news for environmentalists, because not only will they be quicker to use, their erasability means less cutting of trees.
