Nike is no stranger to collaborating with fictional people or places. In fact, they released special self-lacing sneakers to mark the 25th anniversary of the movie Back to the Future. And in keeping with this 80s theme, Nike has looked back into its archives to create a collection of clothing and sneakers based on Netflix series Stranger Things.
While the show might be make-believe, the sneakers are very real — and uncommonly stylish. The Stranger Things collection highlights three of Nike’s most beloved silhouettes: the Cortez, Blazer, and Tailwind. During the 80s, the sporting world was undergoing a bit of an aesthetic reinvention, with athletic footwear becoming more style-forward.
The first phase of the collection launched on June 27th and is named the Hawkins High Pack, after the fictional school featured on the series. These shoes follow the school’s green and orange colour scheme and incorporate the tiger mascot.
The second part of the collection, labelled the OG Pack, is more in line with the upcoming third season to be released in conjunction with it tomorrow. Interestingly, this range will showcase more patriotic colours of red, white and blue in celebration of US Independence Day. The tie to the show is not immediate, but it hints at the new episodes set in the summer of 1985 with the year also being marked on the heel.
Retro 80s fashion will be featured extensively in the upcoming Stranger Things episodes, with characters wearing classic Nike shoes and apparel. The collection has a little bit of everything for everyone, which comes as a natural fit for the series and hardcore Nike fans. Collectors will also be delighted by the references to legendary designs from the same era.
