Penis seat installed on a Mexico City train to highlight sexual harassment

Have you ever been sexually harassed on public transit before? If you’re in Mexico City, it happens quite a bit. The United Nations and Mexico City‘s government have joined together to launch this campaign against the soaring rates of sexual harassment on the city’s public transit. How? By transforming a seat on a subway into a moulded penis seat.

The idea behind the campaign, called Experimento Asiento (Seat Experiment), is that the seat is uncomfortable to sit on, but not nearly as uncomfortable as the harassment many Mexican women face. For U.N. Women, the campaign seeks to generate debate in society over sexual harassment; putting men in the shoes of women. The Mexican government has also tried to combat sexual harassment on public transportation by starting up an anonymous, all-female public transportation police unit; charged with catching gropers in the act in subway cars.

In 2014, a YouGov poll ranked Mexico City’s metro as the worst for verbal and physical harassment. And a reported 9 out of 10 women have been victims of some type of sexual violence in their daily commute.

Those behind the campaign #noesdehombres, or #itsnotmanly in English, hope the viral success of the penis seat will prompt society to re-consider common perceptions of machismo. The stunt includes this promotional video of commuters looking equal parts confused and revolted.
