Dive into colour: Stunning crochet forest takes over Paris

Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto has introduced one of his impressive installations to Paris’ Grand Palais. Composed of handwoven crochet, bark, earth, and spices, Nosso Barco Tambor Terra forms a multi-sensory environment that prompts us to examine our bond with nature.

Hanging from the ceiling of the Grand Palais’ North Nave, this crochet structure feels both organic and structured, resembling a living membrane that reflects the flowing patterns of nature. Ernesto’s method, which is based on classic Brazilian weaving and honed through months of hands-on work, creates a soft texture that contrasts sharply with the hard lines of the building around it.

The Grand Palais notes that Ernesto’s artistry is influenced by the “deep effect of sailing and navigation on the world, which altered the dynamics between people and places.” By incorporating instruments from various cultures into his work, the artist encourages visitors to play them at certain times. This participation fosters a dialogue about the ways in which these rhythms connect different cultures.

All summer long, the area will come alive with concerts, workshops, and talks where everyone can dive into topics like music, textiles, Brazilian history, and climate challenges that influence Ernesto’s creations. This is brought to you in partnership with Lisbon’s MAAT and as a part of the France–Brazil Season 2025. Ernesto’s impressive architectural sculpture serves as a fantastic platform for education.

This crochet installation signifies a symbolic revival for the Grand Palais. After years of architectural restoration by Chatillon Architectes, the venue is now accessible to the public in anticipation of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
