Make crossing the road fun with dancing pedestrian signals
We’ve all done it; waiting for a traffic light to turn, checking to see if it’s clear, then doing the mad dash for the other side of the street. It’s not the safest move. Creatively taking on the question of “how can we make our cities safer places?”, BBDO Germany partnered with Smart. Together they created a series of dancing pedestrian signals.
The Dancing Traffic Light concept was a way to provide the safe, yet fun, prevention of pedestrians jaywalking. They did this by asking everyday participants to contribute to the Don’t Walk figures fluidly and free-style moves. A walk-in dance room set up in in Lisbon, Portugal, invited passers-by to pick a song and groove to the tunes. At the same time their silhouette was projected onto nearby traffic lights.
The dancing pedestrian signals successfully made 81% more pedestrians stop and wait for the green light to come on before crossing. Watch the video below to see these pedestrians stopping in their tracks, grooving along to the dance moves.

Smart’s entire campaign #WhatAreYouFOR is aimed at making our cities safer. The company is asking people to submit ideas about how to make their cities more livable, safer, and more enjoyable to live in.
