Everything you always wanted to know about poop

Poop is a very state-of-the-art-way to find out a whole lot about your health. The digestion process normally takes 24-72 hours – starting from when you eat to the time it takes for your food to journey through the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine until finally, the time of the exit.

Did you also know that poop is made mostly of water (approximately 75%) and the rest of it is a combination of dead and living bacteria, mucus and cells. And it should have the consistency of peanut butter.

Well, creatives Noah Sanders and Helen Tseng have collaborated to produce an infographic that informs us on everything poop-related. Using San Francisco as its study base, learn fun facts concerning peoples daily excrement, and other interesting statistics in this aesthetically attractive infographic.

Everything your always wanted to know about poop but were afraid to ask (and then some)

Population of San Francisco: 825,863 + 265,000 daily commuters + 134,231 daily visitors = 1,225,094 in the city every day.

There are 226 public washrooms in San Francisco. That’s 0.000184 public washrooms available per person per day.

It wasn’t until 2002 that public urination and deification became illegal in San Francisco. Fines range from $50-500, however 10,000 incidents were reported in 2010. An area called Dodge Alley sees the most incidents, with 123 piles of poop reported in 2010.

in 1995, 25 self-cleaning toilets were introduced in the city. 40% are still working today.

There are 8 drop-in shelters in San Francisco where the homeless can shower, shit, and shave. And if they closed, 58 lbs of poop would be unleashed onto the streets ever day.

San Francisco has 1,000+ miles of sewers, and 80 million gallons of sewer water are treated daily. The current sewer system was built in 1906, and in 1974 became the first city in America to be told to stop dumping sewage into the ocean by the EPA.

The average frequency of peoples poops is from 3 times a day, to once every 3 days. The average person produces 1oz of poop for every 12 lbs of bodyweight.

What is poop made of?

It’s 75% water, and 25% insoluble food, cellular linings, fats, proteins, salts, dead and living bacteria, waste material from food, and intestinal and liver substances.

Why is poop brown?

Bilirubin: this pigment is formed by the breakdown of red blood cells, giving it its signature brown colour.

Why you shouldn’t flush cat crap down the toilet

Research suggest that Toxoplasma gondii, a nasty single-celled parasite often present in cat poop, can survive the waste treatment processes and contaminate waterways. The parasite can cause defects and brain damage in babies whose mothers are exposed while pregnant; it also affects people with compromised immune systems.

When cat crap is flushed down the toilet, the parasites go out to kill sea otters and other wildlife. Burying it doesn’t work either, as the parasites can live up to a year. Throw the (cat) shit away in a sealed plastic bag.

Now that you know more than you wanted, find out what people are reading on the toilet or how to pee with morning wood.
