Japanese fashion brand creates crotch accentuating pants
Last year say an exorbitant number of strange fashion trends, but this one is probably the weirdest so far for 2018. Former Louis Vuitton designer Kim Jones just dropped a new collaboration with GU, a budget-minded branch of Uniqlo in Japan. And it has people baffled by one particular item on the new menswear line: crotch accentuating pants.
GU doesn’t shy away from releasing standout pieces that sometimes have you staring long and hard at them. But you have to ask, “is that the design of your pants, or are you just happy to see me?”
The unassumingly named Slim Tapered Colour Block Pants sport an alternate colour down their zipper area, immediately drawing attention to your fly. The crotch accentuating pants come in three hues: off white, beige and navy, each designed with its own stylish contrasting crotch creation.
So, what does this crotch pocket do? Absolutely nothing. It’s not even an actual pocket. If you’re as baffled by it as I am, you’re not alone. Its sparked an uprising on Japanese Twitter over its quirky design. However, if you’re warming to the idea of the progressive trouser, you’ll be pleased to know they are only JP¥990 (CDN$11.69).
A tweet pointing out the pants last week went viral. “Is this design what’s fashionable now? These pants are embarrassing, and I’m not going to wear them. Is it strange I’m being sensitive? Why change the colour there?”
What are your thoughts on this bold crotch accentuating, very unusual, very unnecessary, third pocket?
