McDonald’s introduces its first vegan-friendly Happy Meal
So far, 2019 is starting off on a green note for multiple fast-food chains. McDonald’s UK has introduced its first ever vegan-friendly Happy Meal, along with a new Spicy Veggie Wrap on their menu. This is thanks to the growing demand from customers for meat-free options.
One third of McDonald’s UK customers polled said it was important to them to include more meat-free meals into their household’s diets, according to the chain.
Duncan Cruttenden, Menu Director at McDonald’s UK&I explained the decision to offer more vegetarian options, stating: “Our commitment is to offer great food, great choice and a great experience to our customers and we are constantly asking them how we can evolve and improve. We are really thrilled to be able to give our customers this new choice with the addition of the Spicy Vegetarian Wrap and our first Vegan-friendly Happy Meal.”
The £2.49 (CDN$4.23) Happy Meal Veggie Wrap comprises red pesto veggie goujon, shredded lettuce and tomato ketchup, all wrapped within a toasted tortilla. The Spicy Veggie One, which replace McDonald’s Spicy Vegetable Deluxe, comes with two red pesto veggie goujons with spicy relish, tomato, lettuce, and red onions.
Both vegan and vegetarian bodies have welcomed the fast-food chain’s foray into plant-based fare, saying it shows how “mainstream” it now is to shun meat.
