Type-Cycle animated typeface uses 3D bicycle parts

There are millions of different typefaces for designers to choose from to use as inspiration for their works of art. For example, I previously posted about SFDW’s gigantic mirrored letters or an alphabet made from cut and folded paper. This animated typeface from London-based CG and motion designer Marcel Piekarski, however, is unique in that it completes letters of the alphabet with different bicycle parts.

3D bicycle components for Type-Cycle

Using Cinema 4D and After Effects, this sleek typeface called Type-Cycle was created using 3D letters that are cleverly animated to showcase various bicycle components. To create this typeface, he kept the skeleton of each letter recognizable, but the less visible or smaller parts have been made structure identical to certain parts of a bicycle. Marcel explains that modelling each of the bicycle parts was the hardest part. Finding the time to do the project while he was juggling full-time work and life, however, was actually the biggest challenge.

“I started with ‘B’, where the idea was simple — ‘B’ for bicycle,” Marcel explains. “I wanted to mix a wheel or handle bar with the structure of part of the letter.”

The typeface is eye-catching on its own, but when animated it’s really unique.
