Funny ad features Sarah Silverman crowdfunding equal pay for women

According to this campaign regarding the equal pay for women, women lose out on salary to the tune of almost $30 trillion US.

Actress and comedian Sarah Silverman wants to fix that wage gap. She wants to pay back every woman for the money she’s lost simply because of the genitalia she has. But until that happens, she figures it’s easier to just get a penis.

Reuniting with ad agency Droga5, the new campaign called The Equal Payback Project is crowdfunding the wage gap between sexes. Should it be successful, each American woman would receive a check for the pay they’ve missed out on. Until then, the National Women’s Law Center, a non-profit organization educating the public about the wage gap and advocating for equal pay, will receive monies raised through the video and crowdfunding initiative.

“They fight to help women get the money they deserve,” Silverman says, waving a prosthetic penis. “They’re very good at what they do, you know, for a bunch of girls.”

The fundraising goal is a whopping $29,811,746,430,000; a ludicrous amount, but one that highlights the real numbers of the wage gap.

How the equal pay number was calculated

To calculate the figure, they multiplied the nearly 69 million working American women by the $435,049US a typical woman loses to the wage gap. This what she’s expected to lose to men doing the same job over the course of her career; assuming she works full-time, year-round for 40 years.

Creative director of Droga5, Karen Short stated,“It’s insane that equal pay is still something we’re fighting for in 2014. More than 50 years have passed since the Equal Pay Act and woman still make only 78 cents to a man’s dollar. We want to breathe new life into an old issue still relevant to the modern working women. It’s a wake-up call for us to take charge of our financial fates.”
